ICOS Programs

Human Security and Youth Inclusion

Strategies employed in conflict zones in recent years have failed to stop a steady flow of young recruits to the ranks of insurgent groups. To prevent the process of recruitment and radicalisation, it is crucial to intervene at the earliest possible stage. Addressing the grievances and needs of the “Angry Young Men” is a means of early intervention to avoid radicalisation.

ICOS Fieldwork Research on Emirati Youth Unemployment

In collaboration with the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy, ICOS conducted an extensive fieldwork study with Emirati youth in 2009 producing analysis on the perceptions of unemployed youth on the causes, effects and solutions to their unemployment.

The study aimed to understand the issues of employment and education from the perspective of the unemployed youth themselves, which is a valuable added dimension to understanding the situation as a whole. Findings of the study have demonstrated the eagerness of Emirati youth to become involved in improving their employment situation. Understanding their own perceptions of their social, educational, and economic context is essential to tackling the challenge of high youth unemployment amongst young Emiratis.
